I spend way too much time on the internet...but I guess so do my readers. I now have added yet another exciting and informative site to my already crowded portfolio online. For the past few weeks I have been managing and nurturing the Facebook page for The Collinsville Antiques Company of New Hartford, CT.  Collinsville Antiques is one of the largest Antique Malls in New England with 22,000 square feet packed with dealers who carry everything you can imagine.

The Collinsville Antiques Company is
also the place where I have my own booth called Kitsch n Stuff specializing in retro and kitchen collectibles. I have always carried Mid Century smalls, but now many of my co-dealers at our Mall are adding Mid Century furnishings as well.

Take A Day Trip To Connecticut And Antique

For those of you who like to take a day trip and hunt for  antiques, The Collinsville Antiques Company (open everyday 10-5) is located in an area of Connecticut with many antique and collectibles shops.  You can also have a delicious lunch right in The Collinsville Antiques Company at their retro cafe, "Crusin Cafe" (cafe closed on Monday and Tuesday).

Making Homemade Christmas Trees Using Vintage Kitchen Funnels, Sieves, Rolling Pins

I'll start off by saying that my experience in making homemade Christmas trees ended back in grade school when my pal Sharon and I created a giant custom coloring book to take to children in the hospital. However  after seeing this wonderful blog post on making  "Alternative Christmas Trees" on the popular website Organized Clutter  I'm feeling somewhat creative.


 Funky Funnels and More

It's easy to get inspired with holiday creativity when you poke around the Organized Clutter website. As a collector of kitchen collectibles, I was delighted to see these funky Christmas trees made from vintage household kitchen items such as funnels, sieves,rolling pins etc.

 

Add a few colorful balls and a stand and you are all set with a unique
Christmas Tree for the holidays.

Where to Find Vintage Kitchenwares

You can find these household kitchenwares at Flea Markets, Thrift stores, Yard sales, Antique Shops.
You might want to start collecting during the summer months when there are a lot of outdoor sales and you can generally find these kitchen collectibles at more reasonable prices. If you are reading this article close to the holidays, you may need to not only romp around  your favorite haunts but also look online.

1950s-60s Cory Coffee Maker Set: Another Treasure at Do Wah Diddy

I have been on a major clean out of my basement, pledging to scale down the collectibles that I have accumulated for my shop Kitsch n Stuff. Who am I kidding, I still love to find 1950s treasures while browsing some of my adored websites online. I just spotted this 1950s-60s Stovetop Cory Coffee Maker Maker on Do Wah Diddy. It is still in it's original box with four ceramic coffee mugs. The set has never been used and was probably a wedding gift. Do Wah Diddy has listed it for $65.00 which sounds about right.

I always get a warm nostalgic feeling whenever I see 1950's poodle themed collectibles. This sweet dish towel was found at Vintage Ringo on Etsy.com. I love the familiar 1950s color scheme of yellow and green which probably would have gone quite well with a set of Vernonware dishes.

Dish towels like this one in excellent condition usually sell for $22.00-25.00.
Sometimes you might get lucky and find a towel for less, but there are so many collectors who adore poodles and textiles that you will pay dearly.

Vintage memorandum holders make charming additions to today's kitchen styled in collectibles and decor from the colorful era of the 1930s-1950s. Popular patterns and themes include dutch couples. Scottie dogs, chefs, fruit, Aunt Jemina, cats, owls,  etc.

"Let It Go".......Getting Rid Of Stuff We Hang Onto

"Let it go", "let it go"....oh I'm not speaking about the lyrics to Idina Menzel's song from Disney's "Frozen"....I'm talking about LET IT GO....of all the stuff  that all of us hang onto. At least that is what I thought about when I first heard this song.

What's Stuffed In Your Drawers And Cupboards That Your Can Let Go Of ?

I thought about the plastic bags of socks I have stuffed into my drawers. I'm talking about so many T-shirts accumulated over the years that I could truly cut them
into strips and make enough rag rugs to last a century.  I'm talking about closets filled with so many old blankets that the entire town could sleep over in a power outage.

De-Junking Your Junk 

I'm not done yet. Let it go...let it go.....how about purging spices in my kitchen closet that have no fragrance whatsoever. Or isn't it time to toss the containers of Matzah meal that should have been let go five Passover's ago?  While I am on that subject......when you have lived in the same house for so many decades.....you probably have to go no further than your very own kitchen to find all the collectibles you could ever want!

A Kitchen Collectibles Collection You Could Plotz Over

What Would Your Dream Antique Booth Be Filled With? 

What if you could wave a magic wand and instantly be transported to the antique show, booth or shop of your dreams?  What would your fantasy booth have in its collection? I found the creme de la creme booth in late August when I was strolling around The Madison Antique Show in Madison, CT and I spotted a booth with kitchen collectibles.

This was not simple just another booth of kitchenwares....this was the was by far the most exciting booth of vintage kitchenwares from the 30s, 40s, 50s that I have come across in a very long time. I'd do a fourth book just on this collection alone. The kitchenwares were owned by Elaine and Jerry Berman of  "Twentieth Century Limitied". I'm not sure where these folks have been hiding but I have to tell you that they had a collection you would plotz over.

Their  kitchen collectibles were all in tip top shape and arranged beautifully. I sure hope I bump into these treasures again.

You Never Want A "Loose Kugel."...Especially On Rosh Hashana

The Art Of Baking A Sweet Rosh Hashana Noodle Pudding  

I was telling a friend of a different faith, what foods are traditional for the Jewish New Year, when she remembered actually once before eating a "Kugel" at of all places, her son's school Soccer game. Curious about what kind of "Kugel" she ate, I asked her to tell me more about  her Soccer Kugel experience and together we concluded that she sampled  a dairy Noodle Kugel.

A Kugel Is Like Lasagna ....Sort Of

She remembered thinking that a Kugel was like a Lasagna, sort of... no tomato sauce of course, but noodles, cottage cheese, sour cream, eggs, sugar etc.  She also remembered that the Kugel she enjoyed very much had pineapples as well.

Sweet Lokshen Kugel

"Yes", I told her pineapples, raisens and even apples are often added to Kugels. I pointed out that there are Noodle Kugels and Potato Kugels.  In families that observe Kosher practices (do not mix dairy with meat) , Kugels can be made dairy or Pareve (no dairy). Another gal who was listening in on our Kugel talk, wanted to clarify whether the Kugel was a pudding or a cake. Kugels, are an Ashkenazic-style noodle and cheese dish I told the girls.

After baking this sweet side dish, (or dessert)  you always hope for a firm Kugel which you can cut into nice squares to serve, I emphasized.  Baking a Kugel is an art that can not be rushed.  One of the gals listened intently and  then cracked us up with her response.....

so in other words you do not want a
"loose Kugel".

No, Lisa.......you never want a loose Kugel!

Adorable Kitschy Plastic 1950s Flower Pots

I just added the cutest 1950's plastic flower pots to my collection at Kitsch n Stuff. I bought an entire set of these wonderful vintage retro planters. They come in all the popular  50's colors, chartreuse, sunflower yellow, coral, royal blue, red, green etc. Truthfully, I would like to hold onto to them. But at the moment, they are on display at my shop which is in The Colllinsville Sntiques Companhy of New Hartford, CT.

Home Goods Selling Fiesta-ish Ceramic Dishes

Liking My Retro Junk To Be Original     

Home Goods just opened a new store in my area and like all loyal bargain shoppers, I had to make a survey visit to see just what's new in discounted home decor and kitchenwares.  A very colorful ceramic dish display caught my attention as I strolled in the front door of our new Home Goods store. My first thought was, "my it looks so Fiesta-ish", as in vintage Fiestaware. The colors were so vintage, so retro, so me. BUT I draw the line on what I will buy NEW.  I might buy a placemat or pillow in Home Goods. But when it comes to my kitchen, the kitschy collector has to have the real McCoy or Fiesta is this case. What can I say, I like my Retro junk..authentic!

Vintage Striped Glassware: Reproduction Alert

You Can't Fool The Kitschy Collector When It Comes To Vintage Glassware: 

I recently visited a lovely kitchen shop in Essex CT. I was drawn to a pretty display of glassware which I originally thought was "vintage". Lo and behold, the owner of the shop told me that the striped glasses were "reproductions" of the older beverage glassware.

When I got up close to the glassware I could see that the version I was looking at was indeed newly made.  The clues that I was looking at reproductions are as follows: too many of the same kind of glasses in the store; the size of each each individual glass was taller than usual; there was no sign of age.
